Washing machine not taking water - possible causes and solutions

If the washing machine doesn't take in water, the cycle will stop and clothes will get dirty. This is one of the most common malfunctions or operational errors, which can be caused by a simple blockage or a more serious technical problem. The main causes and solutions are outlined below.

1. Water supply problems
  • Symptom: the machine doesn't start the cycle, just a quiet whirring sound.

  • Reason: the tap is blocked, the water pressure is too low or there is a break in the water supply.

  • Solution: check that the tap is fully open and that there is sufficient water pressure in the home.

2. The inlet filter is blocked.
  • Symptom: water does not reach the machine or comes very slowly.

  • Reason: the small filter at the end of the hose is clogged with scale or rust.

  • Solution: disconnect the hose, clean the filter under running water and reinstall.

3. Electromagnetic inlet valve not working
  • Symptom: the machine is connected to the mains, the programme is running but no water is coming out.

  • Reason: the valve coil is burnt out or the mechanism is stuck.

  • Solution: inspection and, if necessary, replacement of the inlet valve.

4. Door locking problem

The washing machine will not start a cycle until the door is securely locked.

  • Reason: a faulty door lock can also cut off the water supply.

  • Solution: adjusting or replacing the lock.

5. Pressure sensor (water level sensor) does not signal
  • Symptom: the machine will start but incorrectly assumes that the drum is already full of water.

  • Reason: pressure sensor or hose blockage, electronic failure.

  • Solution: cleaning or replacement of the sensor.

6. Control unit or electronics failure

If all the mechanical components are in good working order, the problem may lie in the electronics.

  • Symptom: the machine does not give a command to open the inlet flap.

  • Solution: diagnostics and repair or replacement of the control unit.

When to call a technician?
  • If the problem is not related to cleaning the tap or filter, a professional is probably needed.

  • Repairing a water inlet valve, pressure sensor or control unit requires specialised knowledge and tools.
