How can I make sure my dishwasher lasts as long as possible?

For years, the dishwasher has been the unseen helper in most homes, doing the tedious washing up every day. Over time, however, the efficiency of the dishwasher diminishes and the dishes don't get as clean as they used to. Here are some tips on how to look after your dishwasher.

1. Regular filter cleaning

The bottom of the dishwasher has a filter that filters through the water discharged throughout the wash cycle. As food waste gets trapped in the filter, it is recommended that the filter is cleaned at least once a month. A clogged filter is one of the main causes of a machine's poor wash quality. A very clogged filter will also display an error message and stop the wash cycle.

2. Cleaning the gasket

The water in the dishwasher is heated up to 70 degrees Celsius during the wash cycle. The dishwasher door is sealed to protect the surrounding environment from hot steam and liquids. A dirty door seal will no longer hold the door tightly shut, and the hot steam coming through the door will damage the kitchen furniture. In particular, a dirty gasket will leak water down the front of the machine or even into the machine.

3. Correct dish placement

Don't overload the dishwasher. Leave enough space for the water to circulate so that it reaches all the dishes. Dishes that are too tightly packed will result in poor washing results. It is a good idea to let the machine run empty or with very few dishes from time to time. This is important to remove any food waste that has accumulated inside the machine.

4. Use a good quality dishwashing detergent

I recommend using dishwasher detergent capsules from reputable brands to ensure that your dishes wash properly. As a general rule, eco capsules will wash the dishes properly, but the machine itself will deposit a lot of food waste. However, I would recommend the occasional use of chemical capsules to clean the machine as well.

5. Correct installation of the machine

The dishwasher must be installed in such a way that it is correctly level and does not log. Improperly installed machines will not wash correctly and may leak water and steam.

6. Regular technical checks

If you notice that your dishwasher is not working properly, don't ignore it. Call a professional technician to carry out maintenance and repairs if necessary. Preventive maintenance will help avoid major problems.

Maintaining your dishwasher regularly will reward you with cleaner dishes and a longer machine life. Your kitchen king deserves the best care!
